The following video and value network image were created from Laurie Lock Lee's session on building Value Networks and Partnership Scorecards for Knowledge Managers. The participants were asked to role play either Knowledge Managers or one of their stakeholders (Human Resources, Information Technology or Business Executive). To make things a little more colourful they were given archetypes developed by Patrick Lambe to assist (or otherwise) with their role playing. The process involved each role identifying what tangible and intangible value elements that they thought they provided to the other roles, and also what they believed they needed as value contributions from these other roles. They were also asked to nominate the cost/risk of delivering a particular element as well as the perceived value of a received value contribution. After each role had documented their value flows on the the cards provided and then a "Cards on the Table" negotiation session was held, where the partnering roles get to find out what each other's expectations were and to then negotiate agreed value flows, for incorporation into the Partnership Scorecard.
The video shows some 'serious' negotiations in progress. The resultant Value Network is then provided.

The blue lines are the 'intangible' flows, the green lines the 'tangible' value flows. The thicker lines show the 'low hanging fruit' where the value flow was assessed as high value, yet the cost/risk to deliver was low. Note that in nearly all cases these are intangible flows. There is one dotted line yellow flow which was a tangible flow from HR to KM whose cost to deliver was substantially more than the value placed on it. Of course the non-KM roles were being played by KMers masquerading, so be careful how you use it!
