Mapping the Mining Supply Network
Using data from the directory published by Austmine we show how individual suppliers are connected through the relative similarity of their services portfolios. The more services they have in common the closer they appear on the map.
If you move the strength slide filter you will expose the strongest links. This simple demonstration can expose the competitive (or collaborative) clusters that currently exist. As a supplier you can quickly see who your closest competitors are. As a buyer you can get a better feel for the market place of suppliers available to you.
In the snapshot below we have included only strong relationships and the companies listed here are very similar in the types of services they provide.
What else could be done?
The data we have used is only the 'supply' side. With the addition of 'buy side' data we can effectively visualise and then analyse the full supply network, potentially leading to a more efficient and effective mining industry.
We have also created a complementary map showing how the Austmine service categories are clustered based on similar suppliers providing the same pattern of services. This map can be useful for looking at overall strengths and weaknesses in the industry.
